Burson-Marsteller has its roots in a business started by Harold Burson in 1946 and was founded in 1953, when Harold Burson had a breakfast meeting with Bill Marsteller in New York and the two decided to pursue a professional career in communications. In 1961, the first European branch in Geneva was opened. In the 1980s the company already had offices throughout Western Europe, operating also in the Middle East and emerging markets. In 1983, Burson-Marsteller became the world’s largest public relations firm.

Burson-Marsteller is a part of WPP (NASDAQ: WPPGY), one of the world’s leading communications services networks, and a subsidiary of Young & Rubicam Group which serves some of the world’s strongest brands.

Burson-Marsteller was one of the first agencies that extended its services with web and social media campaigns.
